Cherokee Indian Casino – Murphy, North Carolina

harrah's-casino

We’re going to be seeing the construction of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians’ (EBCI) second casino very soon here in the Murphy area. According to the Citizen-Times, the principal chief Michell Hicks has confirmed that the Tribal Council has already given its go-ahead. With the approval now in place, we could be seeing activity as early as this summer and it won’t be long before we’ll have our very own Cherokee Indian Casino in Murphy, North Carolina (construction is projected to take 18 months).

The Eastern Band’s first casino, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, is on the Qualla Boundary around an hour or so from Murphy and is probably the most well-known of all North Carolina casinos. It pulled in revenues of $386 million in 2010 and is putting the finishing touches to a $650-million expansion, which has turned it into a full-fledged resort. Harrah’s attracts an estimated 3.6 million visitors every year and finally began offering live table games in August of last year.

The second casino is going to start out more modestly. It’s going to be built on an 85-acre property located near the Snap-on Tools manufacturing plant off U.S. 19/74 just beyond the town limits and it has a budget of $110 million. The proposal from the Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise board is for a casino of 50,000-60,000 sq. ft., which would have space for up to 50 table games and 1,200 slot machines as well as a dining area. A 300-room hotel is also part of the proposal.

The tribe’s recent signing of a modified agreement with the state of North Carolina paved the way for all these developments. Apart from the Murphy casino, the Cherokee can also build one more facility in the future. They also have the exclusive rights to operate live table games like blackjack, craps, poker and roulette in all areas of the state west of Interstate 26, which the state will receive revenues from as well over a period of 30 years (4 percent for the first five years and a percentage more in the next 5-year increments).

The Cherokee Indian Casino in Murphy, North Carolina is an exciting development that’s sure to have a significant impact on our area and will not only create plenty of new jobs but will hopefully encourage the growth of other local enterprises as well. Once it opens its doors, we’re definitely going to be seeing an increase in tourism numbers and due to Murphy’s location near the state’s western border, many of these are projected to be coming from the Atlanta, Birmingham and Chattanooga metro areas.

I am so happy I found your site. I really found you by mistake, while I was browsing on Bing for something else. Anyways I am here now and would just like to say thank you for a informative post and an all round enjoyable blog. (I also like the theme/design), I don’t have time to read through it all at the minute, but I have added your website to my favorites, so when I have time I will be back to read more. Please do keep up the awesome job!

When will the temporary facility be open?

  4. Tboy Wilson says:

Am interested in the progress of the new casino. We currently travel to Cherokee from east Tennessee and would shave off an hour on our drive. We could give Murphy the taxes, etc., and the benefit of our other purchases rather than Cherokee, plus saving us time and gas. Looks like a win-win to me. Thanks for the updates and if possible, use our e-mail to keep us up-to-date so we can get in when they first open.
    Many thanks.

Any word yet on the temporary casino? We go to Cherokee once a month and I cannot see much progress. Going for our monthly visit this weekend. Maybe they have gotten busy since last month. Can I get any kind of email updates on the progress?

    • Dex Hubbard says:

      Teresa, good morning,
there is not going to be a temporary casino that was previously discussed. However the casino is in full swing coming forward. The grading work has been completed and they will be pouring concrete this month. The Bridge has started and they have the steel in and are pouring concrete on it also. Power has been installed to the site, and Temporary road already built. They are training people at Tri County Community college, and things are moving smoothly. If you have any more questions please do not hesitate to ask.
      Thanks!

How is the building of the Casino going?
Are property values rising in the area?

    • Dex Hubbard says:

Last year property values in regards to houses rose apropximately 8 percent across the board. Inventory under 150,000 has been shrinking for months. I do forsee an increase in value continuing & the casino coming in will definately increase values. The exact amount of increase is definately unknown as I would be looking through a crystal ball and mine is always foggy…..
Please contact me to discuss if you would like the information. 828-361-4710.
